"Ah, it was not my duties as a diplomat that nearly prevented me from coming. It was the war."
Sander replied as his grin faded away. The fresh scar in his armpit still burned whenever he thought of it, where a Stonedland spear had found a way through the mail protecting the gap in his armour during the final charge at the Battle of Aharow. He felt the urge to touch it, like he'd had more often lately, but instead replied to Vanessa's challenge, forcing back the less pleasant thoughts.

"May the best win, my lady."
He said with a fat wink as he bowed. "Now, I still have to greet your father as I should've done in the first place. I will see you at the banquet table?" He said quickly as he looked around. When he found Duke Calinus - and confirmed that noone was watching - he bent ever so slightly and stole a kiss in return, before walking over to the Duke to announce the Crown Prince's arrival to their host.

The more people arrived and the more conversations continued, the more Andrew found himself glad he had decided to actually have a second Gala. Given the last one ended up with a Duke being assassinated by a mad Count after aforementioned Duke was exorcised of a God, he wasn't certain how this one would actually go. Maybe it was the light show at the end.

Inner musings aside, it was but a moment before he heard footsteps on the path and came back to reality.

"Henry of Arescod and Theronna d' Loyalar, it is an honor to have you in attendance. With the war, I was not certain Ascalon would be able to be represented tonight."

With more approaching, and wanting to get everyone socializing rather than talking to the host, "It's an interesting turn out tonight, I'm certain you'll find it an interesting crowd."

Motion to the door, a couple of aids escorted them inside, relieving them of travel coats and the like.

A few minutes later more footsteps, this just one set by the sound of it.

"Thane Fox," he greeted her, reminding himself of how events had shaken her at the last Gala, "You bless Iungard with your return."

Henry made a polite nod towards the Duke host as he greeted the man. "Indeed, it was a close call, but Gods be praised, a strong Westerly wind and a quick conclusion to the war allowed us to make it anyways." He said, his fresh facial scar rippling as he spoke. When the Duke spoke again Henry grinned and nodded in agreeance. "I do think that there is not a doubt about that. This promises to be an interesting evening, if you allow me to take last year's gala as a stnardard for comparison." He said, and left the Duke to his duties in organizing the chattering crowd to get them inside.

Henry led his wife inside and let one of the servants, who surprised him as he was a First Ones as well, take over the heavy and warm houppelande he had been wearing. He placed the curled chaperon back on top of his head and adjusted his belt again, fitting it over his red doublet.

Entering the dining hall large enough to drill his regiments in he let his eyes gaze over the many long tables prepared for the guests. Silver cutlery and plates and even the rare and abnormally expensive crystal cup were present on the candlelight-lit tables. Awaiting the rest of the guests and their host to arrive so he could appoint them to their seats, Henry took careful note of it all. He would be King one day, and this seemed like a fine way to leave a good impression on one's guests...

Sander in his turn followed the stream of guests inside. Unlike his Princely family he did not feel the urge to clothe himself as fancily. His position in the bloodline did not demand as such after all. As a result he only nodded a friendly thanks to the servants when they took his simpler overgown, revealing a white-red partitioned doublet over brown hoses. To his surprise the servants of the Duke were all first ones. A custom that had been long forgotten due to the horribly toll of the Godswars upon their kind, the far more simple second ones now filled most positions in society such as that of the servant. Rarely one would encounter a first one serving as page or squire as he was growing up in the court of a foreign lord, but this sight, it was like the living artifact of a past that those who experienced it would in most cases rather forget.

He followed his Prince into the dining hall and enjoyed the architecture. The construction of it, as  just about everything about Duke Andrew, was of ancient origins. The fact that this feasting hall was seperate from the keep meant that it only had to serve one purpose, to impress, unlike for example King Roran's lord's hall, in the middle of the keep. The lack of the need to make the buildiong easy to defend allowed for great and magnicifent glass-stained windows to be installed, allowing the light of the setting sun to set the hall alight in dozens of colours.

Yes, Duke Andrew knew how to host a party.

"Of course," Vanessa spoke as Sander wandered off, likely to lose the game before it ever began.

She, on the other hand, went and joined ongoing conversations.

". . . allowed to share the details of the ceremony, but I will say that, for some, it requires great fortitude." She heard Jacksen finish, certainly speaking of the ceremony when he became Sworn to Iungard.

"It is a binding spell." She stated, succinctly. "And a commitment, both by the Sovereign, and the Sworn."

"In fact," Vanessa continued, mentally rifling through the lecture and history books at the old academy, "the title is something of a homage to the original 'Iungard,' a group that worked with my father. As time progressed, a settlement grew up around the Iungard, eventually taking the name of Iungard itself. Originally, there were five that all swore to each other to uphold the original pact of the Iungard. They were the first Sworn, my father among them. You could say that they were all 'Sworn to Iungard', by being sworn to each other."

"As time progressed, others were recruited, and became sworn to one of the original five." She continued, likely with more than just the attention of Nevara, "and as more time passed, the other four originals passed from this coil. That left my father, who was by that point the de facto governor of the town of Iungard as well as the leader of the Iungard. The ceremony has changed a bit over the years, as well as the names of positions, but the truth of the origin or reasoning of it all is something only my father knows, as far as I'm aware. All I know about that, is that the Iungard date back before the Gods War, the Kingdom of the Fading Isles, the Erstes Imperium, the Midnight Legion, even before the name Calinus."

"Hmm, a binding spell you say? does it find similarity in the ancient geas a first one would use to surrender to another?" nevara asked, and continuing on with the questions he said. "Is the number of sworn to Iungard still around 5 or has it grown or shrunk much?" after he had asked those questions he bit his lip for a moment and said: "forgive my many questions I and as it is unsightly to barrage you with so many after having just met, I will hopefully keep it to these for a while."

Nyssa smiled as Andrew Calinus greeted her. He was always a pleasing sight and what she had heard from her father of the wonders the Praesul had shown him just before the last Gala had made her curious about this ancient First One.

Considering the horrors Nyssa had witnessed during the previous Gala, and the sleepless nights they had given her for weeks afterwards, she was surprising herself by not feeling too nervous. She could only hope that no-one would die this time. Or, if they did, it would be in a less horrific way.

"Thank you for inviting me, Praesul," Nyssa said, bobbing a little curtsy. "I see that not too many guests have been scared off by last time. Although I see some new faces. Perhaps no-one told them what happened last time."

With no further ado, Nyssa handed Andrew the scroll from her father, Aldric, and gave his apology for not attending himself. She saw that other guests seemed to be waiting to pay their own attentions to Calinus, so she took a goblet of wine that was offered by a servant and slowly moved away. As she went, she cast a glance back at the Praesul and smiled once more, making sure to catch his eye. Then she began to mingle with the other guests.

"For you". Alina took Vanessa's proffered crystal. Strange it was- she had seen no like from any of the mines of Igilgili. Perhaps it too had powers beyond what was seen by the eye? No- it was likely just the trinket it appeared to be, but strange things were known to happen when Duke Andrew threw a party.

"By all means, please enjoy yourself." she heard, and she smiled. "The same to you, my lady. My thanks for the having of us."

She turned towards the sound of happy chatter and walked into the Gala, zeroing in on what appeared to be an interesting discussion regarding the Sworn of Iungard. Binding magics were no foreign topic, though nothing similar was common in her lands. The common folk tended to assign every strange or unknown event to the gods, but she knew that much of it was simply power, focused in ways they could not imagine.

It had been a while since she found herself questioned so, though it had been a while since she'd really talked to someone that was interested in something she knew about. Well, something she sort of new a little about anyways. This was all entry level stuff as far as the old lectures were concerned.

"A spell that binds the sworn to the magics that are channeled through the earth below us, and binds them to the spells that feed off those energies. If you recall the lights you may have seen in the isles a couple years ago, those were but a small part of those spells." Vanessa spoke, sidestepping things she wasn't allowed to talk about. "The Geas of Surrender, on the other hand, is a different school of arts, one that is easier to teach and at one point was nearly universal. To call it a school of magic might be a bit of a stretch though. It was probably more a small book of magic--simple stuff that relies on every First One's native life energy, if I recall correctly."

"As to the number of Sworn, that depends on how you account. Officially, there are six that are Sworn to Iungard through my father, a seventh if you count his own. I should mention that every individual Sworn to Iungard has a Sword to go along with it, that acts as something of an avatar of the oath. The Sworn possess the ability to summon it by will, but as to what happens to the blade after a Sworn falls in combat, all I know is that they usually make their way back here."

"Tell me Imperial Custos," Vanessa queried, deciding it was time for someone else to answer questions, "where do the Amralo family come from? What interesting things do you recall from your homeland?"

 by Nevara Amralo on 6-49-3 (August 6, 2015 16:52)

As he tried to suppress the sting of the question Nevara said "To say Amralo is a family name is a mistake, it would be more better to say it is a title denoting legal status of a kind."

thinking a bit before continuing he said "I used to live in a very dense forest, getting from anywhere to anywhere was somewhat difficult as a result, but the forest was full of animals and the small garden we had was fertile. We were part of a small community of some kind and strangers were exceptionally rare, sometimes years went by without a visitor. And as for why we lived so isolated? Well culture would be a simple answer to the question."

Nyssa looked at Nevara's face, with is sharp blue eyes and framed by long black hair, and found him somewhat pleasing to behold. She noted the unusual orange lining of his shirt that could be glimpsed here and there, wondering what berries or fruits had produced such a strong colour.

"Nyssa Fox," she replied. "It is a pleasure to meet someone from the Imperium after such a long time. I believe I heard it said that you are some form of historian? That is most interesting. Tell me, is it recorded in your histories that I was once to marry the son of your first Emperor? In time, it would likely have made me the Emperess Consort, or by whatever other means it would have been titled. But I seem to remember that the Emperor's line died out before the arrangements could be agreed. Back in those days, Mercia and the Imperium were fair friends and a princeling of the Imperial House stayed in my father's home for many, many weeks, enjoying our hospitality. It is a shame that the Imperium fell into such disarray after the House of Aerenia failed."

Nevara said "Partly I am a historian but my task as custos is to make life easier for future and current historians, I record and keep. Although I am quite interested in the worlds history very few written document have survived. As for your engagement: I think you refer to Teron Aerinia? I have read in one of the local publications that he had visited Mercia."

while smiling softly he furthers "If so then please consider it written down now and I'm sure we could pursue friendly relations once again." after a moment he continued "I wish I knew more but recording the current events, the war now ended between the Empire and Eldamar, the reorganizing of the duchy I'm in and attending this gala I have not yet had time to spare from the meagre 43 weeks since I had arrived in the Empire. If you could tell me anything then I would be more than delighted to listen, but please don't feel obligated to do so as I can get quite engulfed in asking such questions, especially to people I have just met.."

"Yes, that was it," Nyssa said. "Teron Aerenia. Quite a dear man. It was a pity what became of him and his line. I have always had an interest in history myself. It may well be because I am so old now."

Nyssa laughed, having apparently amused herself. A few of the other guests glanced in her direction. She had a surprisingly loud laugh for a woman of her size. Her father once teased her that it was like the braying of a donkey, but she was sure it couldn't be quite that bad.

"I wish I could tell you more about the history of the Imperium. Now, my brother Jeron would have been able to say so much. He was my father's emissary to the Emperor in the early days of the New World and he resided at the Imperial court. But Jeron has been gone to Ancestors for some time now. " Nyssa's face clouded a little and she made a ritual gesture used to honour the dead. "I still miss him. We lost so much when he was murdered. As it is, I can only really tell you the things that are probably well know. Perhaps of how old Rathgar marched south in their terrible hordes and pillaged the Imperium? I believe they reached the gates of Lakehold itself."

With Nyssa having moved inside and no other arrivals seeming to be coming in the next several minutes, Calinus returned inside. Conversations wafted by as he made his way around the guests and towards Taticus, trying his best to not interrupt the servants that were beginning to properly set the table with the proper requirements of an evening meal.

"I believe you invited me for a chat, Taticus?" Andrew said, sitting down across from the Duke of Hawks.

I believe you are holding on to something that Prefect Alexios wishes to take custody of. I have been asked to facilitate it's transport to Hawks Hold. I trust you know to what he refers, as he appears to be taking some pleasure in keeping me in the dark.
